During the 25th anniversary party for Sega’s longtime mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, two new Sonic the Hedgehog games were announced for near future releases.
The first new game, developed in collaboration between Sega, Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games, is Sonic Mania, a sidescrolling platformer deliberately created in the same vein as the original sidescrolling Sonic games, with some new features like the drop dash, as well as the ability to play as Tails and Knuckles. Sonic Mania will be releasing sometime in Spring 2017 for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The second game does not have an official title yet, but the project is codenamed Project Sonic 2017. The trailer showcases Sonic once again fighting the robots of Dr. Eggman, though he is also assisted by his younger self, suggesting that this may be a sequel to Sonic Generations (though Sega has apparently declined as such). The game will release sometime in Holiday Season 2017 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC, and Nintendo NX.
