At their E3 booth, Atlus demoed some new gameplay footage of the upcoming Persona 5.
In the video, we can see the Protagonist going about his daily life. You attend classes where, like in the previous games, you can answer the teacher’s questions for boosts to your social skills. After class, you can explore the school, or venture into the surrounding city. In the city, you can visit various shops, get a part-time job for some extra scratch, or engage in various shenanigans for boosts and rewards.
At night, the Protagonist and his friends assume the guise of thieves and enter The Palace, a mysterious other-world born from the hearts of the corrupt. This is where combat takes place; the maps are much more detailed than the uniform mazes from the previous games, appearing as an elaborate, decadent castle patrolled by armored knights. By sneaking up on a knight and pulling off its mask, enemies are revealed; not the usual Shadows from the previous games, but the regular demons from the rest of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Combat is a bit more streamlined, while still maintaining the traditional 1-More system and All-Out Attack for when you knock enemies down with their weakness. A new mechanic, however, is demon negotiation, on loan from the rest of MegaTen. When you knock all opponents down, you can talk things out with the demons, and if you give favorable responses, they’ll join you as new Personas.
It’s hard to put into words, but this game just oozes style from every orifice. Watch the footage, you’ll see what I mean. Persona 5 will be out September 15th, 2016 in Japan, and on February 14th (Valentine’s Day!), 2017 in the States.
